In the space of 2 days, 3 separate items costing under $5 purchased at Kmart in Big Bear were overpriced by at least $1. The first time it happened, I chose an item I thought was $2.99, but when I walked out after cashing out, I realized I had just spent almost $5 after tax. I checked the receipt and thought I must have made a mistake because the receipt clearly marked the item as $3.99.
The next day I went back for something else. The items had corresponding prices labeled on the shelf, but when the cashier scanned the barcode, the price was higher by at least a dollar. When I made her aware that there was a price discrepancy, she just said that she couldn't change the price registered by the barcode. I asked for a manager who immediately told the cashier to do a manual override for under $5.
I wouldn't have bought the first item had I known it was $3.99 because I could easily have gotten it cheaper somewhere else. I wonder how many items are marked under the barcode price in that store and how many people have walked away without questioning.
Kmart has a reputation as being a discount store with good customer service. Customer service is not a greeter standing at the door saying "Have a good day!" while the management has just fleeced your Debit card.
