I have been a customer of Direct TV for over one year. When I first began, I was promised a portable DVD player for signing up and never received it. When my service began I signed a one year contract. A few months later, I called to have a DVR receiver installed. I was never told about any changes to my one year contract. I referred a friend and was promised a $50.00 gift card for the referral. I never received my gift card either. I wrote to the company and was informed they could not do anything about either issue and that I was basically out of luck. I waited for my contact year to end and called Direct TV to cancel service. I, now knowing all about the promises they make, made sure to ask SEVERAL times about my contract and was informed that I was no longer under a contract and could cancel at any time. I set up my cancellation date, glad to finally be done with this company and its VERY QUESTIONABLE business practices. I received 2 calls from 2 different reps offering me credit on my bill for the portable DVD player and the gift card, if I stayed on as a customer. I was never once informed or warned about an early termination fee. I declined both times as I was very unhappy with the service from this company. The only time they are interested in helping you is when they are losing you as a customer. I then received my final bill with an early cancellation fee included. I immediately called and I was shunted from one person to another. I have written, e-mailed and they will not budge. I was never informed verbally about a 2 year contract and I never signed anything agreeing to a 2 year contract. I am currently in the process of sending a certified letter to the CEO of the company and would be VERY interested in a class action suit against Direct TV. I am a business person and I can't believe that this company can continue to get away with these practices. I want the fee canceled immediately and for Direct TV to leave me alone! Considering the number of complaints against this company, a re-evauation of their customer service policy is needed. You should not be made to keep a product when you are unhappy with it. You should be able to expect the company to notify you up-front if there are ramifications of changing services. If I had been told about the contract I would never have gotten the DVR. I live in an apartment and the installer made a huge mess in my apartment which I will have to pay for when I vacate. There are holes in the walls everywhere and he did not plug the outside walls so there is now cold air coming through the holes. Direct TV needs to get it together and stop ripping people off!
