GC Services-Operations Division has been harassing me, my family, friends, co-workers, employer, and even neighbors, saying I was in default on my student loan. Today, was the first time they reached me at my workplace, they've just gone too far with this, and it's got to be stopped.
They have threatened me in many ways, for example; They told me that the federal government had many ways of 'dealing' with people like me, and if I didn't cooperate, they could ruin my life!
I went through their entire process of reporting my income and expenditures. When they finally admitted that my income was not even enough to meet all of my bills each month, they told me that I had better quit my 'deadbeat' job and get a better one that would enable me to make their minimum monthly payment, which just so happened to be over 25% of my total income.
I was hesitant, but I continued to listen. It seemed like they weren 't really concerned with anything I told them after they got all of my information, but they did state that they would use this information against me if I didn't pay off the account.
Everytime I have spoken to anyone of their callers, I have requested a statement of the account in question. One that showed beginning balance, interest and collection fees added, and ALL payments applied to that balance. (They have been keeping my federal income tax refund for at least 20 years, and I never saw proof that any of the payments I made (over a period of several years) were actually credited to my statement.
I explained to them that my husband, at the time (a militant Iranian student who supported the revolution in Iran), had fraudulently applied for, and received monies from the New York State Higher Education organization, under their student loan program. I have given them all info that I have on him, and also the fact that he was made liable for all of this debt, in our divorce decree. They just laughed.
I have explained to them, many times, that my health is really in jeopardy, and I don't really know how much longer that I can continue working. (Another laughing matter to them!) 'Mr Bowman', or whomever I spoke with this morning (they always hesitate to identify themselves, and usually lie about who they are in order to trick individuals into giving them more info), told me that they would just take my disability from me then.
They even had the nerve to say that they would cause my husband to loose his job over this matter! Wouldn't you think, after them speaking to practically anyone that I've ever known, in any way, that they would know that I'm single?
I told them that after my mother passed away, I moved in with my 74 year old father, also in poor health, to prevent him from having to go to some retirement home (that we don't have the money for). Then they started in on him. They wanted his name, social security number, amount of social security benefits that he collected each month, even wanted to know if he had other means of retirement! I told 'Mr Bowman' that this had nothing to do with my father.
He started yelling and screaming at me, my co-workers could hear him he was so loud. I finally just said that I would not speak with him any longer if he didn't stop screaming at me, and that I refused to speak with anyone using as much profanity as him. That made him scream more loudly, and I finally hung-up.
I, as well as the attorney at my employment, have tried to reach them many times by using the phone number he gave me, there is no answer. I 'Googled' their phone number and you would not believe all of the trash I found on them. They have been kicked out of the Better Business Bureau, there are even 'Blogs' out there, just about them and their collection practices. Some of them even state, to the letter, the same exact treatment that I am writing to you about today!
Please help! I do not know what to do. I had to file bankruptcy in to get rid of a one month hospital stay for blood clots (upwards of $60,000.00), and missing 5 months of work because of it. I'm concerned that I'm having my legs 'mapped' next week, to see if I'm facing amputation, due to blood clots. I also have serious arthritis, osteoperosis, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, bulging discs in my neck and lower back, I need my right knee replaced and also have carpal tunnell syndrome in both arms, and one of the medications that I was taking for my chronic depression was just found to have given me diabetes!
I'm at the chiropractor and massage therapist offices at least twice a month (not covered expenses with my health insurance provider). I'm so sorry, I'm being selfish and only thinking of myself. My father is really suffering terribly, from his emphysema, and I'm sometimes afraid to leave him in the house alone when I have to go to work, and I'm his physical, emotional and financial support!!!
Please help me-iv'e even considered suicide!
