I have a student loan that I owe. From New Jersey Higher education. I applied for deferments on this loan. As a single mother making minimum wage raising a child I could not afford to pay this loan. I became Disabled almost three years now. I just started to get Disability last year. I never got my lump sum payment from them yet! Since 2004 I have applied for discharge of my student loan due to my disability. I printed out the paperwork that was sent to me by the Higher Education Office. Took it to my doctors and paid to have them filled out. I have been turned down three times now because they say the paperwork is not filled out right. I took the papers back to my doctors recently and made sure they were filled out right this time and I sent them back to New Jersey. They are reconsidering my discharge now. (HMM let me guess the answers going to be NO again) The reason I say this is because I was told while they were in the process of considering my loan for discharge that no collection would be taken until they came to a decision about my discharge. Today I received a phone call on a FRIENDS cell PHONE and it was a RUDE guy from D.C. S He told me that congress passed a law last year that on student loans they can persue you for that money forever and that they planned on taking everything and anything they could from me of value. They were going to attach my disability check for 15 percent of what I get, which isnt enough to live on now. That they would also go to court and get a judgement against me. He told me that would ruin my credit and I would never be able to get anything except with cash again. That the goverment would come after me for this money and they will get their money. I made like three payments on this loan in 2000 when I had the money to pay it, I lost my job. They have collected money from my income taxes for the past two years getting 947.00 in 2005 they received only 95.00 last year and will take any from this year as well. I have not ignored these people at all I have done everything required of me to get this loan discharged I have kept in contact with Higher Education and no matter what I do its not right or not good enough. I feel I am getting the run around from the state of New Jersey that they are not going to let my discharge go through no matter what. I have had their paperwork filled out if its wrong then their paperwork is wrong not my doctors. The last time I was told it was denied from my one doctor because he didnt put a date on the paperwork and I did not sign it in my maiden name. The whole time this loan has been collecting intrest and fees from where New Jersey Higher Education Keeps Passing this loan around to collection agencys the amount they say I owe now has doubled from what I borrowed.
When this started off I owed them$ 5,000 it is now up to 12409.59 as of november 6 I am waiting on this company to come take my Powerchair that I just got and can not afford to buy the ramps that I need and the lift I need to use it. I just dont know what I have to do for this company to find me disabled. The man from D.C. S did everything but call me a liar and a thief and insisted I had the money to pay this loan. I need help!
