My home warranty came with the purchase of my patio home and I used them for small problems with my garage door opener and dishwasher the first year so decided ot renew when the renewal came due.
In my second year with American Home Shield, I contacted them to report that my a/c did not seem to be working correctly. Eventually made connection with the heating and cooling company that was going to work on the unit, and they determined that the unit should be replaced. Replacement unit was installed and the cooling was acceptable.
That fall the heat was turned on for the winter season and the unit produced no heat. Called American Home Shield again and, after several days of discussion, they sent a repairman out. He determined that I had been given a cooling unit only with no heat capabilities. He installed an auxiliary heat unit in the air handler. Heat was produced but electric bill doubled. Called repair again and asked if there was another option. After many phone calls to American Home Shield, a heat pump was installed and the repairman disconnected the wire to the auxiliary unit but did not remove it.
The new unit appeared to be used, was very noisy and not very effecient. However due to time constraints of a new job, did not make further calls to American Home Shield. Was dissatisfied with the service received and did not renew my annual agreement with American Home Shield.
Because the unit was especially in-effective in winter months, used small space heaters instead of using the heat pump, and installed ceiling fans and bought supplemental small swamp cooler for summer months.
Set up saving account for new outside heat pump unit. When the funds were available, contacted A-Quality through a referral from a close friend.By this time, I had trust issues with heating/cooling companies.
Met with manager of A-Quality to get an estimate of replacing outside unit. After a thorough inspection, he determined that outside equipment was a 3.5 ton unit and the air handler was a 3 ton so they were mis-matched.in his estimation, the outside units would continue to be a problem and may have to be replaced every few years due to the mis-match. He also determined that the auxiliary heat unit that had been installed was a potential fire hazard as the wiring used to connect to the electrical service was inadequate to handle the voltage.
Am now told I will need to replace both inside and outside units with an estimate of approximately $5000, which is not in my budget and it's already been 105 degrees here in AZ.
