Ripoff Attempt to hold hostage to non-existent contract

I had Dish Network Satellite service for around 9 months and was satisfied with the service provided but decided to cut some household expenses by switching to lower cost cable. Called Dish Network to cancel and encountered some of the rudest "service" personnel ever. Truly unbelievable attitudes. During the conversation I was advised that I had signed a two year contract and if I cancelled would be charged several hundred dollars.

Now, I knew without question that I had neither verbally or in writing signed or agreed to any time commitment whatsoever nor had any such thing been mentioned when I signed up for service. I told this to the person and also told them to send me a copy of whatever documentation they believe they possessed that showed I had agreed to any such thing. (here I am being held hostage because I cannot cancel/switch without resolving this or risk them charging my credit card). They tell me it will take a few weeks to get "the document" from a warehouse but that they will send "it" to me. Over a month goes by and I receive or hear nothing. I then write their corporate headquarters (by the way, trying to find a physical address to write to is an exercise in itself..) anyway I write the corporate headquarters with this same information and demanded they produce any documentation that would substantiate their claim.

I received a telephone call from them advising they "could not locate my paperwork and were releasing me from my contract". (of course, there never WAS a contract).

I then call and cancel and they mail me boxes to return my equipment. No problem for me returning the interior receivers and remotes but they want me to climb up on my roof and remove the arm from the satellite dish and return it also! (they originally installed all of this of course) I actually tried to do this (at great peril to my safety I might add) but physically could not loosen the bolt to remove it. I sent them the receivers, etc. But told them I would not pay for the item on the roof and they could come get it any time they wish. I have not heard back but will not be surprised if this game of theirs continues.

I have dealt with utility companies and many other such services for over 25 years with never having had a problem but this is one company I would advise everyone to steer clear of. I also advise you not to fall for their false threats = from what I have read this is a common practice of theirs.
