First I received collection calls at home about 6 months ago, and when I returned them they said there were collecting a 2001 debt from an "econnoserve" phone company. I told them to send me a bill and I'd consider it. I have no recollection of the company.
I never received a bill or written correspondence. But I received several such phone calls, I always said please send me a bill.
On 11/16/05 I did finally receive some bill for $19.65 but it's not itemized and it lists "Mapnad Viatel Cons" as the client. It says FINAL ATTEMPT TO SETTLE ACCOUNT!!! It also says pay now and 50% off*
I called the 800-687-6344 number and told them I think they might have the wrong person because I never had any such phone technologies in past years.
The operator assured me that I did in 2001 and that I should pay, and she said "if you don't believe me just look at your credit report from Jan of this year"! I asked here for some of the phone numbers I supposedly called or for an itemized bill. She said she would call me back with such.
First of all, I don't think I have any such bills from 4 years ago. I've never had an outstanding bill in my life. Second of all, that a collections company would report such to a credit agency without first delivering a single attempt to collect letter or a phone call is negligent.
If this is fraud, as I suppose, they need to be stopped. If it's a supposedly legitimate collection company they need to do a much more professional job as they are just giving a bad name to legitimate collection companies and harming people's credit with malicious and criminally negligent practices.
