UPS Requiring NEW ID to ship Ripoff

UPS is requring government issued photo id or two forms of identity including social security card to ship. This is a new policy that took effective Oct 24th.

Nowhere in the UPS policy does it say ID is required to ship. They admit they collect and use personal information but then double talk to say they "don't" sell this information. However they do "share" personal informatin. Its a scammer trick that information isn't sold, its only Shared.

Here is what happened to me. Ran a package over to UPS to mail on Nov 2nd. Had only my work ID with had my social security number on it and a school id. UPS wanted to enter my social security # into their computer. I was like excuse me you want to what here. Made a real fuss with UPS and was told I could produce a drivers license which they would record, a birth certificate and social security card, passport, alien card (I'm a US citizen) or other government issued id showing an address that matched the mailing address on package along with my social security card. This policy applies only when you use UPS counter service.

Made complaint until I reached a district manager who said the policy to require and record government issued id is a government law. I was referred to the UPS site to read about the law. Nowhere on the UPS site is there any information about this "law". I called the FTC and they said its against the law for UPS to record social security numbers for shipping within the US.

There is one loophole around the UPS policy to require ID to ship, you can use their postal stores and pay a surcharge to ship. How is that any security is improved if folks can use third party shippers or the UPS stores to go around the ID requirement? More of a scam here to get your identity that UPS "promises" will be ever so safe. How many of us believe that one? Needlessly to say I will never ship with UPS again.
