Ripoff charged account off when they agreed to drop my early termination fee

I made an agreement with Verizon Wireless in November that if I returned my phone, they would cancel my service and not charge any type of termination fee since the service I was getting was inadequate. When I bought the phone I informed the sales rep that I would be moving to a small city in Maine and wanted to confirm there would be service and was told there would. Well once I moved, there was some service but no voicemail or caller id since it was boucncing off non verizon towers or someting. Anyways, I called and complained and made the deal to turn in everything and they would waive the fees.

Well fast forward to two years later and I get a collection letter from Allied stating I owe $377, when I turned in my phone I actually had a credit balance on my last bill! I have called Verizon and they claim they cant find me in their system and have told me to deal with Allied. I checked my credit reports and it is showing up as a charge off. What should I do from here? I have never had anything bad on my credit. Should I pay Allied or fight with Verizon or both? I want to buy a house in the next year or so and this will cause me to get a higher interest rate on my loan. Help!!!
