After reading an ad in the Boise Statesman searching for models, actors, singers, dancers, I called the number provided. My call was returned about two hours later, on a Sunday afternoon in January. The man, Rob, asked that I send taped samples of my voice, plus two monologs as soon as possible. I did, and Rob called back to tell me I was an undiscovered talent, that they could help me find work in the Boise area.
However, Rob told me I had to send him three hundred seventy-five dollars for marketing costs— for getting my package out into circulation. This, I thought, was rather odd. I hesitated about sending any money. I even looked up RMK Network on the internet, but could not find anything, good or bad. I also could not find them on a map. But, I figured, why not send it and see what happens.
I called the agency, told them I'd sent off their required fee.
Rob informed me that he had already sent out my press packet. A huge red flag went up in my mind— why would he do that if he had not yet received any money for this?
Of course, nothing happened after this. No phone calls, no contact for the next couple months. I called back, left a message. The guy I talked to, who said Rob had gone in for surgery, told me not enough time had passed, be patient. I felt very stupid for sending the money after that. I did not trust my instincts, my gut reaction that this did not seem right or above board.
So now, almost in October, I am still waiting for any contact from the agency, for any work they promised me would come flooding in. I guess there must be a drought in the Boise performing market.
