I'm retired from a business I ran for 20 years. The points made in the consumer complaints (Better Business Bureau or Buyer Better Beware? BBB. Nationwide Alert! THE FOX GUARDING THE HEN HOUSE consumer complaints (#1343) about BBB are certainly valid.
The BBB gives 'member businesses' a great deal of latitude in response to consumer complaints against them. After all, their primary income is from these member businesses.
The BBB will quickly give a non-member business an unfavorable rating on the basis of a one-sided customer complaint.
I used to tell my customers to call the BBB. I was a non-member, and had a satisfactory rating. I always explained that a satisfactory rating of a non-member was, in fact, an indication of genuine proper performance; a satisfactory rating of a MEMBER business was meaningless.
