I recently joined Wind. Shortly after that, I received a text from a company called Cellago informing me that I was subscribed to their service, for $10 every 2 weeks, and must text back STOP if I wanted to discontinue. I did text back STOP, after stopping in at a Wind store and being advised to do so by an employee (who said not to worry).
This month, I was billed twice ($20), and Wind claims no involvement or responsibility. I was advised to call Cellago. After waiting on hold for a while, I spoke to a representative, who informed me, after some evasion and argumentation, that: "I would not say that my company is doing anything illegal, but the way that they advertise is bad." She claimed that they send texts telling you you've won an ipad, with very fine print one might not notice, which makes one a subsriber if one replies to the text.
Here's the problem: I'm not dumb enough to reply to a text like that. Most people are not dumb enough. So who subscribed me? The agent was not interested in answering that question (in fact she, a woman named Sharon, hung up on me). Her job was merely to inform me that "someone" entered my cellphone number on their website ("the only way to subscribe").
Another big problem: what's to stop anyone who knows my phone number from entering it on their website, and therefore subscribing me? What's to stop Cellago themselves, or Wind, from subscribing me.
This is fraud. This is piracy. This is theft. Cellago is a criminal company that uses our cellphone numbers to steal money from us! Wind is complicit, as they do nothing to warn their customers.
