Sprint Nextel Corp
Misleading free trial offers

November of last year i called into nextell to cancel my phone service of 8 years for reasons of poor reception. My last contract with them had expired 3 years earlier and i had been paying month to month. At this point they offered me a free 90 day trial of their sprint phone service no strings attached. If i didnt like it i could just cancel. All i was responsible for was paying the taxes and anything over 400 minutes per month. I ask if i could use my old nextel phone and they said no but they would provide a phone free of charge for the trial. I asked what i would do with the phone if i didnt like the service and they informed me that i would just send it back, no strings attached. I went over the free and no strings attached with the sales person and he verified it again so i accepted the trial offer. After 60 days i found the sprint phone to be as bad or worse because it was always roaming, very inconvienient for me. I called in to cancel the phone because i new i was not going to keep the service and i have never been one to use something for free just because it was free. At this point the sprint rep told me there would be a $200 phone fee for keeping the phone over 30 days. I explained what the original sales person had stated and they refused to accept it. I stated several times during the conversation that i would pay exactly what i had agreed to with the original sales person and that if they would play back the recording i would pay it but all they did is put me on hold twice for several minutes at a time and came back on and said that the recording was not available and that i would still be responsible for the charges. Now several months later, i am beening billed for an early cancellation fee of $ 200. Funny isn't. I ask them to provide documentation of this agreement with me and it doesn't happen, but a collection agent is now hounding me. How can a company get away with this? They just make up hidden rules, no proof of agreement with the customer, refusing to play back the only contract they had with you the verbal contract made on the phone and we as americans citizens have no where to turn to hold them accountable for this kind of business practice. Does anyone have any suggestions.
