Consumer Report

I googled Belkin for support on my new router because it was slow, and I was directed to a technician who obtained the serial number of my router and offered to check it out. I was told the router was working fine, but the tech told me that my computer had been hacked by outside sources and all my personal information, banking, etc. Had been compromised. He said people were monitoring everything I did online and that the computer needed to have 6 registry files removed that the hackers had put in place. I was told that they could be fixed at $59.99 each, and when I told him I don't have $360, he offered me a "deal" at $299.99. Stupidly, I gave him my credit card information (thinking that I called them it should be legit) and then I was told to leave my computer alone for an hour. The technician prodeeded to remove cookies and temporary files, and do little else, and the wireless is still as slow as it was. After doing some research online, I see that this is a ruse that they use with people seeking service. They told me word for word what I am reading from others. They wasted no time charging my credit card, and now I must wait until next week to file a dispute with my credit card company, but since I played a part in the deception by giving my info, I may not get my money back. I thought myself above being able to be scammed and should have done my homework, but was scared into compliance. Lesson learned!
