Michael & Son
Consumer Report

On August 23 I signed a Michael & Son contract given to me by Mr. Shawn Stout, a Michael & Son employee, for a GENERAC 10 Kilowatt Guardian Emergency Generator and the installation of said generator at my home. I paid Michael & Son $5,565.00 for the generator and the generator installation.

A Michael & Son electrician by the name of "Joe" came to my home on August 29 and delivered the generator to a location on the side of my house. This electrician remained at my home for about five hours and during that time, he connected all the electrical circuits to my emergency generator. Then he departed my premises without telling me how to use my generator nor did he leave me an owner's handbook.

After "Joe" departed my premises, I went outside to where my generator was located and discovered that the propane gas regulator required by the contract that I signed with Michael & Son was not attached to my generator nor was my generator hooked up to the propane gas line that came from the 100 gallon propane gas tank installed on the side of my house by Amerigas, a propane gas company from Ellicott City, MD, that I contracted with to provide the propane gas and gas line to operate my generator.

I telephoned Mr. Shawn Stout immediately to ascertain why the generator had no propane fuel regulator as required by my contract and Mr. Stout informed me that Michael & Son had only sent an electrician to my house and this electrician was not licensed to install propane gas lines or regulators. Mr. Stout further informed me that if I wanted Michael & Son to install the required propane gas regulator and connect the regulator to the propane gas line running to the 100 gallon propane tank, I would have to pay about $1,000.00 more for this work and the county permits required for this work.

My contract with Michael & Son specifically states the following:

Scope of work:

5.install a natural gas/propane fuel regulator on the generator to insure proper gas pressure.

6. Provide a county/city electrical/gas permit and inspections.

7. Provide all labor and materials necessary for the electrical and gas installation of the generator.

Without the propane gas regulator and without the regulator connected to the propane gas line provided by Amerigas, the $5,565.00 Guardian generator is useless. Also, it would be nice if someone from Michael & Son would return to my home and show me how to use my generator.
