Consumer Report

I purchased a DVD virus protection disc on June 18th of 2011. I had it for a year and promptly renewed it online on 6/18. They charged my credit card. Shortly after that my computer crashed and we decided to buy a new one. The new one came with its own virus protection. Thinking I didn't need AVG any longer, I called them and tried to cancel my order. The man I talked to was very rude and asked me a lot of questions. He then "transferred" my call. I sat on hold for approximatly 10 minutes. Then the line went dead. I decided to wait for another time to call them back.
A few days later, we decided to get the old computer fixed.in fixing it, they removed my AVG from the old computer. I still had the disc and my receipt for the AVG so I figured I could install it myself. I had 3 different product keys. One on the receipt, another on line, and one on the box itself. None of them worked. I then called the Co to get it re-installed. They took me to their website, then told me my computer was full of errors. They wanted me to pay them to fix it. I refused, because we have a 4 yr. Contract where we bought the new computer. It also included repairs on our old computer.
I called the "Geek Squad". They remotely checked the computer and found no errors at all. Then my husband called AVG back to let them know. They did the same thing to him and told him the same thing. The said "Nobody else could fix it but them" We had just had our computer repaired two days before we called AVG
My husband at that point asked for a phone # where we could cancel our AVG. The guy rudely told my husband, "We don't have a #, look it up in the phone book" then he hung up.
I went on line and found a phone # at customer service. My husband called them, the lady looked up our account and told us, it was too late to get a refund. It was only good for 30 days from the date of the receipt.
We didn't expect a full refund, we still had 11 months left on that conract. WE thought they would pro-rate it.
So bottom line, they wouldn't let us re-activate it and they wouldn't give us any money back.
We believe AVG is running a scam operation. If we can't get our money back, at least people should be warned against purchasing products from them
