The guys that came to my door were working off the same script that most of the other people have reported about the various subsidiaries that all seem to go back to United Family Circulation, Inc. He said that he had made the Dean's List at UC and was fundraising to provide books for kids and that he would get points for a school trip to Spain. He had the names of three local children's groups that you could choose from and a selection of payment options which didn't entirely make sense to me. He was very charming, said his Mother lived around the corner and heard I was generous, knew my name (it didn't occur to me until after he left that it is on the mailbox). I was a bit out of it and he seemed like a good kid so I wrote him a check. But after I looked at the receipt it said quite clearly that it wasn't a charity. I got online and did some research and found variations on this same basic sales pitch that all screamed scam. Called my bank and cancelled the check right away.
I got an incoherent letter from United Family Circulation, inc that was clearly a form letter as I'm assuming they get cancelled checks quite a bit.
