Two personable young men came to my door on a sunny Saturday afternoon claiming to be the children of a family in the neighboring subdivision. They claimed to be raising money to go to a baseball tournament through a charity. They offered to wash my windows the following day if I gave them a check for $100. I and all my neighbors paid. I called their so-called parents of the name they had given me to confirm the funds were going where they were supposed to.
Of course their kids were at home and the others were imposters. We immediately printed and distributed 200 Fraud Fliers around the entire neighborhood telling everyone to cancel the checks. Called the police and used the school email address list to alert all parents in the community. I had written charity in the memo of the check, but also noticed the slip they gave me said NOT a charity.
So I checked the internet, found all of you and got our local Police informed, contacted the school PTA to get the email list informed and also the local school used their email list to issue a student identify theft alert. The REAL kid was 7 years younger than the imposters had claimed and goes to my daughter's Junior High.
