This all started, as it seems with most reports, when I answered several "help wanted" ads on Craig's List. I received an email from a person named Naomi Davis who wanted to utilize my services to cash a check and send money via Western Union. I received a check for just under 3000.00. I endorsed it over to my landlord to cash for me. Immediately upon his depositing the funds into his account I received this email:
"Good day to you. This now seems to me that you want to run
away with our money. We will have to involve the FBI and the local
CIA on this cos it seems you want to screw us. And you refused to reply
my mails concerning the money we sent to you regarding your first
assignment. All our conversation chain is been watched by the federal
bureau. And besides, we an agent that works as a fraud investigator for
FBI, we will be giving you 24hrs to get back to us with the money
transfer details or else...

My first clue (can't find the original email I received from this person) was the misspellings. Any reputable company will use a "spell-check" in their correspondence. I played their game just to see how far they would go. After receiving this email I received nothing further. A copy of the check was sent back to my landlord stamped "Account Closed".
I'm not sure what the scam was, but I believe they were tracking the check to obtain my personal information. When I turned the tables on them I guess they didn't like it too much.
Fortunately no one lost any money. I wanted to share this just in case there's someone out there planning to respond to these people.
