I have had various components of my exhaust system replaced by the Monro Muffler on East 96th St in Indianapolis for several years. Always reasonably priced and I'm treated very well. Until now.
I noticed that the car sounded a little louder than normal yesterday so took it in to see if there was a problem. My muffler has a life time warranty with Monro.
They called me back and said it would cost $1000 (but they'd do it for 50% of that) to replace everything but catalytic converter, and the muffler is under warranty, because according to them, everything was rusted out and ready to disintegrate, it was a mess. When I said, but it's just a little louder, it just started yesterday, how could all this be wrong?"Oh we dont know but this is what it costs, but if you can find a place to do it cheaper, let us know and we'll meet their price. Discount. I told them no way would I pay that much, took the car to a local independent shop. He showed me that the muffler had a small leak in the side seam, it's no big deal and it could wait. There is some rust on the pipes but no leaks and nothing drastic.
When I called Monro back and told them to just replace the muffler which is under warranty, he threw a fit saying that if he did that and then the rusted pipe fell off and caused the muffler to fall off, I'd have to buy a new muffler.
I told him to forget it, I knew they were screwing me. I checked prices at NAPA and a pipe they were charging $360 for is $98 list price at NAPA. So I know they're buying it cheaper, the part numbers matched so I know that's where they buy their parts.
I called a small local muffler place, told them what happened, read the quote to them so they'd know what I needed and got the following quote, everything, including muffler, from catalytic converter back $338. Monro wanted $536 and that didn't include the muffler.
You couldn't pay me to go in there again. I was treated horribly.
