Damages Goods

I adopted a 3 year old black Labrador Retriever from KLR on 6-2-11. The dog I received was clearly injured. The owner stated that she trimmed his nails and bathed him before I arrived, and that she cut them too short. She even pointed out that the dogs blood was on the concrete. The dog was holding up his back leg whenever he would stand still - enough to where I inquired about it. When I did ask about it she referred to the nails being cut too short.

When I called about the dog prior to the purchase date she told me the dog was from a home where the owners lost their jobs and could not keep him. When I got there she then told me he was from the pound. I asked if he was neutered when she got him and she said yes. The paperwork from the vet it showed he had been neutered in April, after she took him there. The paperwork stated they microchipped him, and there was none found. There have been many, many discrepancies between what I was told and what is true. I was told on first of the month the dogs were given Advantage Multi heartworm medicine and in the middle of the month the dogs were dewormed. The dog I adopted was full of roundworms. Had he been given both of these things April - June, they should not have been there as one prevents them and the other kills them.

I returned to Memphis after this 16 hour trip and took the dog to my vet. The vet checked him out and confirmed that the dog had an apparent leg injury. After x-rays were taken of his legs, he noted that there was a luxating patella (where the knee cap pops in and out), and extensive arthritis. The arthritis was so bad which shows that the injury was old and he had gotten used to the limping. When I called Michelle and spoke to her about the dog, she said for me to call her back when I found out how much it would cost and we would "work something out" with helping with the surgery. She wanted to make it right. She wanted me to keep the dog if I wanted him, which I did. She understood that my returning the dog would mean that she would have to have the surgery done for him. I have emailed and called and there has been no returns from Michelle. She has her phone set to where you cannot leave a message. Numerous emails have been sent and there has been no response on her end as to what she can do to help me. The dog had to have a $1500 surgery where the doctor saw that the leg was worse than he thought. I have to keep him on daily medicine for the rest of his life, which is an additional cost. I have a $2000 vet bill now, for a dog that - by contract - should have been healthy. The adoption fee per the website was $300. My credit card was charged $310, where she explained there was a processing fee. There is no mention of that extra fee on the site. Nothing was mentioned to me when I picked him up of this fee.

There is also an extensive application I filled out to adopt from there. They say they take great care to place their dogs with good homes, so that they are not returned. No one called me, or any of my references to check where this dog was even going, or what kind of home I have. I had to call, again, numerous times to see what was happening with my application. I realize the $10 is not a large amount of money, but the amount this has cost me is much more than that. The contract states that the dog was healthy at the time of adoption. She claims to have not known. Having this dog in her possession for the amount of time she did, she clearly knew he was injured. Only the middle two back nails were trimmed on the injured leg.
