Sallie Mae - Consumer Rip-Off

I have been laid-off almost one year due to the economy. Because of this I have fallen behind in my Student Loan (along with other obligations I have) When approaching Sallie Mae on several occasions to to make payment changes I have been met with nothing but rude and degrading comments. I cannot speak with one person twice and end up telling my information over and over... Which is NOT getting conveyed forward. I have also been being harrassed and threatened that if I do not do as they say I will be sued. I have done my best to try and resolve the situation, with no avail. What can a consumer be expected to do if the lender will not work with you. The last person (Tyler) I talked to asked me how I was making my car payment if I could not pay them. Then he asked me where I got the money to do so from. My answer was that I needed a vehicle to seek out work and that how I was making my payment was none of his concern. He kept saying "either you pay XXX or we will start proceedings". No matter what I offered, my comments were not listened to. At the beginning I was told that the conversation was recorded. Well I hope it was in it's entirety as I would love to have this complaint listened to by John Q public. My alternative is to let the loan go in default (which I don't want) thus giving Sallie Mae little to none of what is owed or them to work something out so that I can repay the loan, even if it is in smaller payments. At tis point my credit is shot so it won't effect much, but how can a person who is trying to do the right thing be treated so badly??
