My situation is very similar to others... I fell for it under the impression that this was a well-known organization like Cambridge (the university) and the national organization I involved with in college ("Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges & University" which recognizes the contributions and accomplishments of college students in the community). I found out that it was a scam (googled it) after I hung up the phone with the who's who acct manager (Susan Davis).
I immediately called the credit card company to report what happened and reissued a new card. But it was too late, it still appears on my cc bill. After filing the dispute with the credit card company and waited for a month... The acct manager said that there was nothing they could do to reverse the charge, even to block the transaction in the first place. He advised me to file complaints to consumer advocate agencies (such as FTC, BBB, Attonery) and take legal action. If there is anyone here want to file a class law-suit against this company, I WILL BE EXTREMELY HAPPY TO HELP!
Today, I found out that WA state actually has a law that protect against telemarketing sales. Under the law, the sale is not final until I recieve written confirmation of the sale (which I never receive!).
I told the Cambridge who's who gal (Denise Misolo 1516-535-1515 ext. 1204) today, she said that I should've recieved a welcome packet within 2-week (which was 2 months ago), and it was my responsibility to let who's who know that i didn't recieve it. This is just bullshit. She wanted to fedex it to me overnight, but i refused, i don't want her to assume that I accept the sale.
I also mentioned that I couldn't get in touch with Susan Davis (that her phone# has been disconnected 1516-535-1515 ext. 1207), Denise Misolo sounded confused and said Susan Davis has worked there for several years and she still is (even gave me Davis' extension to verify). The weird thing was she refused to transfer me Susan Davis. I also asked for a copy of the recording with Susan Davis on Jan 7.. Of course she did not (blaming the computer system)... Not even a copy of the transcription of conversation. She said she could play the 25-minute recording on the phone... But I asked her to play it next time when I have my laptop with me to record it (by turning on my cell phone' speaker). She said we can set up a time for it... I wonder if her phone number will be disconnected tomorrow~!!
At the end, bascially I told her that if they don't give me a refund, i will file a complaint to Better Business Bureau & Attorney General of both WA & NY and Federal Trade Commission.
Initially after knowing that my credit card company is not going to help me, I accepted the reality that i never get my hard-earn money back. But who's who suddenly called me again to verify my info for the book. I told myself that "you ask for you! I will take every action to notify everyone about you!" I wish i googled about this company sooner... But i'm not going to let them off the hook!
