Charged me a cancellation fee 60 days after I cancelled - never told me

I switched to Direct TV from Dish Network in June because of a man placing flyers on doors in my neighborhood. He handed me the flyer, said it was month to month, I could cancel at anytime and I could get it cheaper than Dish Network. Under these conditions I decided why not go ahead and try something new. I still have the form he completed on me. It says nothing about a cancellation fee.

Six months later, unhappy with Direct TV and their arrogant customer service department, I decided to return to Dish even though they were a bit higher. I called Direct TV the first week of December and cancelled. They issued me a credit on two statements December 18 and 26. They NEVER mentioned anything about a cancellation fee not on the invoice or when I called to cancel. I think I was set up.

In February I get an invoice for 175.46 cancellation fee of $212.00 less my credit. I wrote them a letter explaining that I was never told of this fee and their reply was that it was verbal. Since I did not hear from them I forgot about it since they were not contacting me.

Spring of 2008 all of a sudden I get a letter from the collection agency Allied Interstate. They did not ever call and leave me messages, just letters. Then in June it showed up on my credit report 15 MONTHS AFTER DIRECT TV CREATED THE DEBT. I sent Direct TV a certified letter in July asking them to tell me when I agreed to their terms and/or this cancellation fee. They did not respond
