Misrepresentation of service

I called the TV Shop on November 11 to determine whether they could fix a problem with my Hitachi LCD 50 inch set (bought three years ago from Conn's Company). I spoke to Danny at the TV Shop who quoted me a $79.95 charge plus tax to come to my home and give me an estimate of what it would cost to fix the problem. I was told the visit charge could be considered part of the final cost of repair. When the repair man came to my home this morning he looked at and told me he would have to take it to the shop to determine what is wrong with it. At that point he told me it would cost $289.00 just to look at in the shop plus the cost of parts. I had been left with the impression in my conversation with Danny (two phone calls) that the repairman would be able to tell me what is wrong allowing me to determine whether I wanted to have it repaired. Had I known at the outset that it would cost me $79.95 plus tax plus $289.00 just to look at it in the shop I would not have asked them to come out. This is a clear misrepresentation of what services they provide. I would have to have paid almost $400.00 just to have someone look at the set. Only an idiot would do that. I called Danny back to complain and he told me that he had alerted me to these costs. That is simply not true. This represents devious busines practices and should not be allowed to contnue. I have doing business with repair people for a great number of years (I am 77 years old) and I have never been suckered in this way. Anything you can do to rectify this situation will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jacinto Quirarte, Professor Emeritus UTSA
