Ridiculous ripoff with a fraudulent contract

TRS Is a big scam. My husband and I purchased sofa, loveseat, chair, ottman and 3 tables, through TRS at ASHLEY'S FURNITURE last OCTOBER. The balance at that time was $2300.00. The monthly payments started out as $340.00/mth but somehow increased to $368.00/mth. We were never able to get a balance quote over the phone. They always told us we had to come in to get the balance. The payment was due on the 6th and they would start calling on the 6th if we hadn't made the payment, and call everyday until we did.$5.00 per day was added to the normal payment.

They were the coldest, rudest people I have ever spoken with. This was one of my husband's bills that he paid every month so when he passed away in September I was out of the loop as to the status the the account. When they called on September 6th four days after my husband passed, I told them the situation and that I would have to get back with them. They continued to call me. They expressed no condolences, compassion or understanding. I did make the September payment along with the added $5.00/per day late fee.

On October 6th like clockwork they started calling again and called everyday until I finally told them that I would be paying the full balance off but I didn't have the money yet. The young lady insisted that I try to make a payment by Oct 11th or it go into "whatever" status. She quoted me the payoff amount of $1751.00, the first time we were ever able to get a balance, isn't that peculiar? The daily phone calls continued into the following week when I finally received a message from someone who had actually come out to my house to pick up the furniture. Well needless to say I was livid!

I called TRS and spoke with Bernard and let him have it with both barrels. He confirmed that they had been to my house and stated that I must have moved. I told him that I had not moved and they had no business trying to pick up anything and they better be glad that I wasn't home. I explained to Bernard my intent to pay the furniture off as soon as I received the money that I was expecting. I further express to Bernard that if they continued to call me they would not be received in a gracious manner at all and they would do well not to call me anymore. As soon as I got the money I would be sure and get them off my back.

Well by the time I got ready to pay it off on Oct 18th the amount had increased from $1751.00 what I was quoted a week earlier to $1880.00 My efforts to find out just how this figure was arrived at was met with total resistance from Bernard. He stated that per diem was added, but refused to tell me what the per diem was. He also stated taxes were added. When asked what taxes he stated sales and property taxes. I told Bernard that that was bull and those taxes were added in the inital payment to which he state "that was just for the down payment". I told Bernard that the contract was fraudulent and would not hold up in court. Bernard stated the contract was a federal contract and as such was valid. I howled and told him again that that was bull and there was no such thing as a federal contract for lease furniture and he must think I was stupid. The lease agreements have pay off amounts scheduled by specific dates. When asked why the amount he quoted was so much more than the pay off on the lease agreeement, Bernard again went to the per diem and taxes alibi. I told him that I was gonna pay off the crap anyway because I had the money.

This type of fraudulent operation should not be allowed to continue! Do the math. We started off with a balance of $2300.00 and change, payments per month of $368.00 from November '07 through Sept'08 amount to $4048.00 and change, then add a payoff payment of $1880.00 and change, amounts to nearly three times the original sales price not counting late fees and the initial down payment of $400.00. This was not a simple rip-off. This was ridiculous!
