JD Byrider
Ripoff

I "bought" a car from JD Byrider the last week of October. I had just moved to Columbus, IN from Muncie, In and the car we had, overheated and apparently cracked the head. At any rate, I had to have a car. I have serious health problems and we have a 10 year old daughter that we have to get enrolled in schoo. We drove the car back to Muncie for the weekend to visit my sister, and the car quit on us, just as we got into Anderson.

We got the car started and got to my sister's house where I called Byrider in Columbus (where I had purchased the car). They told me that they also owned the Muncie store and someone would come pick it up and fix it free of charge since I hadn't made a payment yet (remember I had only had the car a week or less). They told me the battery terminals were coroded and needed to be cleaned and I could pick the car up. Okay, I picked up the car, drove it home and it quit again. Again, I called Byrider and they said they would come and get the car and fix it.

It turned out that the motor had to be replaced. They called me when the car was done to come and get it (this was the day before Thanksgiving) and we were going to my neice's house in Muncie for Thanksgiving. The guy at the lot put my license plates on the car for me and we left for Muncie. Now, mind you all these times I had the car worked on, they told me don't worry about making a payment until we know the car is going to be ok.

The week after Thanksgiving, I talked to the manager Terry Gearheart and told him I would be in on Tuesday to make a payment. We got 6 inches of snow that night and school was cancelled and we were living out in the county and couldn't get out until they plowed the roads. I called Terry and told him I would put a money order in the mail since I couldn't get into town. He told me he didn't want my "f-ing" money, he wanted the car back and he was going to report it as stolen because I picked it up from the lot after the motor work was done and I didn't have a "release form" to get the car.

I called the state, county and city police stations and asked them if the car had been reported as stolen and they told me not to worry about it because Byrider does this kind of thing all the time. At any rate, they picked the car up on a flatbed truck at 5:00 A.M. Thursday, December 12. Then Terry had the nerve to call us around noon that day and ask how our "f-ing" feet felt. I asked him to repeat what he just said and he did and I asked who he was and he told me and said I've got my car back.

I shook my husband to tell him about the phone call and he had died of a sudden massive heart attack. After the funeral arrangements and everything was taken care of for my husband, I went to Byrider to talk to Terry and more or less tell him what I thought of him. He conveinently wasn't there so the "credit manager" agreed to talk to us. I told him what had happened to my husband and I felt like they had a big hand in bringing on the stress that caused the heart attack and his viscious reply was "
Are you trying to tell me that Terry caused his death?" and then he asked us to leave. We left but as I was going out the door I told him he had not heard the last of me.

Is there anything we can do to stop these people from taking advantage of other people and running them down? This is absolutely no way to do business.
