After answering a seemingly normal ad for a Flash / Action script programmer position, I was contacted by Jeff Clinton who runs his recruiting service from his home. After successful phone calls with Jeff he and I determined that I was a fit for this web design firm in Noblesville called Saucepan Creative.
After interviewing with Mike Sauce and his Wife Gabrielle Sauce, I had determined that I would work for them and assist him with projects. I began working May 19th and was told by Jeff Clinton that I would be paid when he got paid from Mike Sauce. This should have been a red flag to me but I overlooked it as both are relative startups and working with startups in the past, I know how small startups are.
I emailed Jeff on Monday, June 02 10:35 AM after working for two weeks asking when I can expect to receive compensation for my first 2 weeks. He answered back with I am waiting on a check from Saucepan Creative. I was told by Mike on Friday a check was being processed. As soon as I receive their check, I will cut a check to you. Also, I would like to get an invoice out to them today for last weeks hours. Do you have a signed time sheet yet? If so, please fax to 317.682.4700. So never the less I waited all day for an answer to see when I would get my money. NOTHING
Before I left to go home that evening around 7.30PM Mike had come in and sat down at my desk for a small chat and told me that he was thinking of putting me on his payroll rather than going through the recruiter Jeff. He was telling me about all these projects he has coming up and that things will be humming along soon with this that and the other. It to me seemed like some attempt to stall me even further. I just let in one ear and out the other.
So, the next Day obviously was Tuesday the 3rd and I had decided that I would not show up until I had been paid. Seemed rather fair as I didnt want to get another week deeper into working for these guys without getting my first two weeks pay. So, around 10.30 AM Both Mike and Jeff started Calling me repeatedly, emailing me wondering where I was. Finally around 12.00 I answered my phone and it was Jeff, and he had asked my why I hadnt come in and I told him that I wanted to get paid before I came back in. Seemed only fair to me.
Well, back and forth all day I received emails with Jeff asking for my pay, and then finally about 7.30PM that night Jeff Calls me up and told me that Mike wanted His keys back to the place. Fine I said, Im cooking some catfish and will meet you at star bucks in about an hour. Thats what went down, I meet Jeff at the Starbucks on Conner and gave him the keys back and chatted a bit about how I know someone was either bSing me or Lying. Either way, a few more moments of chatting with Jeff at star bucks and I was off with the promise that I would get paid in the next day or so.
Well about a half hour later, Jeff called me to tell me that Gabrielle had just sent out the check and there was some sort of mix-up. I gave both of them every chance to pay me. Below are the actual emails between Jeff and me. As of Today 6.10.2008 Jeff is not answering his phone or returning emails. Mike Sauce called and told me that he sent payment to Jeff. I will update this as things progress.
