While Hybrids are produces by other automobile manufacturers besides Toyota, I received the following email verbatim from a Toyota employee:
"This is a little bit of information we have worked up for our prospective prius customers-
Fuel comparison
2008 Prius Pkg. 6 vs. 2009 Corolla XLE
15,000 miles per year Highway Mileage
$4.00/gallon
(As of 5/28)
Prius Pkg #6 MSRP $28,303.00
44 miles per gallon
Yearly Fuel Cost: $1,360.00
Monthly Fuel Cost: $113.00
Corolla MSRP $20,234.00
35 miles per gallon
Yearly Fuel Cost: $1,712.00 ($352 more than the Prius)
Monthly Fuel Cost: $142.00 ($29.00 more than the Prius)
The Prius will cost $8,069.00 more than the Corolla at time of purchase. The yearly savings in fuel in the Prius is only $348.00 over the Corolla. At that rate it will take approximately 23 years to recoup the additional up-front cost of the Prius.
At 20,000 miles per year is would still take over 17 years to get the extra money back spent on the Prius. Yearly fuel savings would only be about $468.00/year.
Even in a Pkg #2 Prius, which is $3,675.00 more than a XLE Corolla, the time it would take a customer to recoup their up-front money would still be almost 10.5 years (at 15,000 miles per year)."
Think about it and do the math. Consider another vehicle. If you think the emissions are going to save the earth, please check in to that as well. This type of hybrid isn't going to do it versus gas powered.
Now, if they develop a true "hybrid" that is not powered by any form of gasoline and produces less emissions, then we all have something to cheer about.in the meantime, buy the less expensive gas autos and donate the savings to research and development of a true 100% alternative energy powered car!
