Bernstein took $150,000 that my family worked hard to scrape together and told me he would fight for me. He then turned around as soon as he had my money and told me he could do nothing for me because he thought I was guilty. I could not afford to hire another attorney. Bernstein never met with me to prepare me for trial, never provided disclosure, and never brought me files I repeatedly requested so I could try to put my case together. He showed up each day just as court was to begin with no files, no briefcase, and sat slumped down in his chair looking like he'd rather be anywhere but there.
What makes this so heinous is that my case was the biggest case of its kind in California legal history. The trial lasted three months. The defense put on a case that lasted close to three months. Berstein put me on the stand with no preparation for one day and one hour the next day. I gave him a list of witnesses and he consistently refused to call any, including expert witnesses. He never interviewed anyone related to the case nor did he make any effort to do basic preparation. When given the opportunity to cross examine witnesses, he either chose not to or asked very few questions.
I've lost everything and this pathetic excuse of a lawyer took my money, made promises, and did NOTHING to help me. My only hope now is to try and get a new trial or to appeal the decision. DO NOT hire this lawyer. He's a scam artist who reels them in and then feeds his clients to the sharks!
