Maryann Christensen lost custody of her daughters in 1987. Her first hearing regarding child support was in 1988 in Contra Costa County, CA. For most of the last 19 years she has refused to work or to pay her obligation to her children. Currently (January) she owes over $115,000 in arrears. Yes, this Mom is ripping off her kids and their future.
When DFACS removed the children from her home, she even refused to let the girls (ages 8 and 10) have any of their clothes, toys, school books/uniforms, or any family photos. We caught Maryann taking some of the kids possessions to donate to charity and the rest to storage. How cold is that - ripping off your kids things! From the start she would not put her children's needs first, which is the short version of why DFACS removed the firls in the first place.
Once Maryann was past the $30,000 mark, she became the first mother on a most wanted deadbeat parent poster (California) as well as the first woman to be featured on a cable access deadbeat parent program (Contra Costa County, CA October 1993).
Even those extreme measures did nothing to move her toward supporting her two children - not even $20 a week or on their birthdays, or at Christmas. Maryann demonstrated no interest in supporting their education, outside activities, community involvement, or social events.
She went as far as to declare herself as 'living in her car', lied during hearing after hearing so that she did not have to show financial/tax/business records, and to stories go on and on. Some of the time she and her 2nd husband lived in investment properties owned by his family and worked 'under the table' for relatives. They used a mailbox drop in Oakland, CA to avoid having a street address. She even went on assistance. So she was ripping off her kids, her in-laws, and the system.
Maryann has marketable job skills - she had been a legal secretary. She told the court that she was a truck driver when she pleaded to hold on to her driver's license; since that was the only period that payments were made with regularity, (Oct to July), we know she has that marketable skill also.
After July she no longer paid support. Yet around that time, Maryann and her 2nd husband, Walter Christensen, were able to purchase a newly constructed 4 bedroom home in a new Bakersfield, CA subdivision - while Maryann still claimed to be unable to afford even minimal payments on her child support debt. (July until April)
Early in the system garnished her wages and she stopped working.in October there was the first tax intercept in 18 years.
You have to be pretty cold-hearted to rip-off your own kids for over 20 years. But, Maryann Dannels Christensen has made a career of it, while totally ignoring the needs of her children.
