I had a dedicated (computer) phone line for several years. I always paid my bill on time. After subscribing to a satellite ISP I had the dedicated line disconnected. I got a final bill which I paid—on time. Two years later I received a $61.26 check from Verizon. The check (letter) contained no explanation. I assumed that I had over-paid and it had taken some time to get through their bureaucracy and send me reimbursement. Two months ago I got a letter from a collection agency naming the Verizon account. This was the FIRST notification—and it was from a collection agency. I promptly called Verizon to inquire and complain. I was told that they had credited someone else's payment to my account. I asked why I was not simply notified of the error and that I was being "punished" for THEIR mistake. After talking rudely to me, they were inflexible and gave no apology for their error or for turning the account over to a collection agency without having sent a single statment. Today I got a threatening letter from a second collection agency. I know that I am a small account holder and that Verizon, a huge conglomerate, cares little about me. Are there no laws to require corperations to take responsibilty for their own mistakes? Does the little guy like me have no protection against unfair and insulting practices? Someone please start a class action suit and I wll join.
