Back in March my husband and I went to the 10 Day Furniture Market and purchased, among other things, a dining room table & chair set (1 table w/leaf, 8 armchairs) for a total of $924 plus tax. The table was right off the floor but they gave us the 8 chairs still in their original boxes.
After a few months we noticed that some of the arms on various chairs were getting loose and we told the kids to be more careful with them. My husband attempted to repair them but quickly found they were of a very poor design and quality.
By the end of 6 months almost all of the chairs were damaged in some way from regular use. I decided to call and see what could be done. I was told a person would come by and take a look at the chairs.
After the guy came out and looked at them he said we could have them replaced. I told him that if the replacement chairs were the exact same design and quality I most certainly did not want them. He then told us that maybe we could come down to the store and pick out another set of chairs to swap them with as long as they were the same price. I told him it was highly unlikely that we would find another set that would match the table. He then replied that he would "do whatever it would take to make us happy". I asked if that would include a complete refund and he said yes, on the chairs. He would turn in his paperwork and give us a call back the next day (Saturday) or Monday.
Wednesday came around and still no phone call so I decided to call again. I explained who I was and what I wanted and the girl I spoke with pulled my paperwork and said yes, she saw where we wanted a swap or a refund and that we should come by and take a look and I said at this point all we wanted was a refund of that chairs ($608). She said fine.
Based on that, and the comments from the repairman (who showed up in a JAG), we went out that same day and purchased another complete set of table & chairs. There was nothing wrong with the table but since we were not going to get our money back on it I decided to give it to my sister.
Today is Friday of the same week and I get a call from the furniture market stating that they were authorized to repair or replace the broken chairs but no refund was possible. I demanded to speak with the manager. Her story was the same - it didn't matter what the repairman told me or what the girl told me on Wednesday, and that the only option available was repair or replacement. The chairs came with a year warranty and I told the manager that I wasn't happy with chairs falling apart after 6 months. She said that they would only give a refund after 7 days. I told her they didn't fall apart in 7 days and that 2 seperate people had told me I could get a refund. At that point she said she would do a full store credit on the set. I asked if the "set" included the table and she exploded with "NO, you don't have a problem with the table". I told her fine, the chairs would be back tomorrow. Maybe my husband will be able to do what I couldn't get accomplished - get a full refund issued. I'll keep you posted.
So now I'm stuck with a $300 table that I can't use and will have to give away, and a store credit that I will probably never use since all they sell is crap, plus the bill for the replacement set of table & chairs. I only wish that the old saying were true in this case - that you get what you pay for - because if it were, I wouldn't be out over $2000!
Do yourselves a favor and don't buy furniture from these people!!! You will most likely regret it and have no recourse whatsoever!
