Consumer Report

In January, I was called by someone who claimed to be from Microsoft Support. They purported that I was infected by a computer virus and my machine was being hacked. They said they have a contact with Microsoft that will take care of the problem for $300.00. I was connected to a person who was very clearly from India. Today, I got a call from a person who said they were from Microsoft Support and my machine was infected with viruses. They had me go through the same procedure that I went through at the end of January. The problems outlined at the earlier conversation still exist. This new person told me that they had a company that would fix my computer for $300.00. It was the same pitch as before but this time I declined the service since I have already paid $300.00 at the end of January for the same company to do the same thing. I suspect this company has a sales pitch to sell their company's services which are not any good at all. I have called them on Saturdays and Sundays as well as the middle of the night (I work on the computer at night) I have had to leave a message for them to call me back (in 12 to 24 hours). I have yet to receive a callback. I have had to wait until Monday to call them and state my problem. They do some work but for 3 of the problems I have encountered with my computer, I had to show the tech person how to solve the problem. All they have done to address my complaint that since they installed the malware program, my computer is running very slowly is to delete some of my programs and clean out the temp files. The call I received today revealed information that only would be available to someone who is inside my computer. I suspect the company is either very lax in their protection of computer information gleaned from customers or they are selling that information or their 'anti-malware' program is indeed giving my information away. It is possible that in their access to a machine they install a monitor program that sends private information (passwords?) to a location outside the US and may be used to do some harm.
