I walked into my elderly mother's kitchen to discover she was befuddled and had check books open. I asked what was going on and she said a young man had come in asking for money to donate books to children's hospital. She wrote him a check for $84 and he said "okay, that's for boys, now we need one for girls". She gave him $90 in cash. He gave her a receipt for only the amount of the check. I asked if she had seen the guy before and she said no. I asked her to go ask the woman if her grandson was in the area. The woman said she had no grandson. I called the number of the receipt and spoke to a woman named "Mrs. Christian" who validated that ID number and gave me instructions how to cancel the order. She said that when the notice of cancellation was received they would send my Mother her check back so she didn't need to stop payment. Fortunately we stopped payment and changed her account numbers anyway, since as of 2/6 we have not received the check. The police told us that if the company responded that this was an invalid transaction or if he did not turn in the cash we could open a case.
