Surplus Alert
Rip-off! CC charge, deceptive ad, e-mail and no person to complain to

First of all, this company sent me a deceptive e-mail making it look like it was affiliated with e-bay. "Free info" turned out to cost $4.19 in shipping costs. I received an e-mail saying that I would get the materials soon (it came about 10 days later) and the e-mail said that I would be charged $29.95 if I didn't respond by a certain time.

The original e-mail ad did not mention anything about a charge for membership (strike one). When I looked at the material it was very involved and also outdated, by the time I reviewed the disk that was sent the time to "cancel" had past. On October 22 I received a call from a man (I don't recall his name) who wanted to talk to me about the surplus alert site.

When I told him I wasn't interested and wanted to cancel he became very rude and hung up on me in mid-sentence. I checked my credit card bill and found their charge of $29.95 and next to it was the company's 800 phone number. Suffice it to say I got the run-around (strike two). I immediately contacted my credit card company and told them not to accept any more charges from this company; then I e-mailed Surplus Alert and informed them of my decision to cancel.

They responded by saying that I had to contact their office in writing and not by e-mail (which I found strange since they did everything via e-mail and internet - strike three). Upon further inspection of their "welcome" letter I found that they only had a PO Box number and no formal address (a tell-tale sign that something is up). I sent a strongly-worded letter advising them that I expected my web "storefront" to be cancelled "immediately" with a copy to my credit card company, along with the e-mail I sent to them cancelling my enrollment.

I sent that out October 25th and on October 29th I received an e-mail from Surplus Alert advising me that my "online store" was cancelled. I can only say that looking for a way to earn a living in the era of "Bush-enomics" rip-offs like these will catch the unassuming, but "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." Now I found this web site and its great - I check everything here first - you guys have saved me a couple of times already. Thank you for this forum, it is sorely needed.

Yours
