Hughesnet Horro

I'll start off by saying that I have TOLERATED hughesnet for the past 5 years. Fortunately, I am heading off to college soon. So I have some time to kill, so I will start at the very beginning. If you are a fellow hughesneter, I feel your pain. If not, read ahead and you'll understand why this site is full of hughesnet complaints.

I have played games online since I was 8.internet has been a huge part of my life, though I am fairly ashamed to admit it. So when my family decided to move to central, PA (home of the Amish) I was a bit skeptical. Then hughesnet popped up. It was one of two options, the other being dial up. Hughesnet it was. From the day of that decision, we have been nothing but frustrated.

Reason 1: Completely unreliable. It turns out they DO NOT tell you all the information. We did not know about the fair access policy or the morning unrestricted download allowance. So just to be clear, we had NO idea. We had to search the Internet to find out our IP address. Doesn't matter anymore, the Internet only works during the 5 hour timeframe anymore.

Reason 2: Download speeds. There aren't any. Might as well say adios to YouTube, Netflix, music, video games, email attachments, and just any web page in general. You can say hello to the public library computers. That's where you'll be spending most of your time. Seriously though, a 30 mb file (approx. 1/6 of my allowance) will take at least 10 minutes. That's if the Internet decides to work.

Reason 3: Support. I don't have much personal information on this because I refuse to deal with them. From what I have read, you must know atleast one other language to communicate at all. They will not help you whatsoever anyway. However, they will offer helpful insight (plug the modem in). Be prepared to wait 30 minutes to 2 days for this advice. If you let them hang up, be ready to wait again. If you happen to get a tech supervisor, they will let you know the problem in 2 business days. SPOILER ALERT: you need a new modem.

Reason 4: Clouds = Anger. Any weather that is not a sunny day with a blue sky will make the signal drop.

Reason 5: You will probably punch your tv. I know that every time a hughesnet commercial comes on, I want to. Heads up! Free installation means you will pay ATLEAST $100.

Hughesnet is a complete ripoff. They recently installed a new satellite. Didn't help at all. If you can, avoid this Internet to save all the hassle.
