Matthew Chafos Beware of the sketchy Business Practices of Matt Chafos in

Matt Chafos put an ad out on Criagslist to buy a diamond. I responded with a diamond and he was interested it in.

So I sent him a picture copy of the appraisal with had all of the appraiser's details, size, weight, color, value, everything and he was still interested and wanted to meet up at a jewelers to verify. Because I have no car and live in an inner city (need no car) I could just go anywhere in any suburb to go to whatever jeweler he wanted to go do. I gave him all of the information to verify the authenticity of the diamond at the jeweler that did the appraisal (The Jewelers in Saint Anthony, MN).

Matt claimed that they didn't answer their phone or return his call. So I suggested to meet at a pawn shop where they could verify the authenticity of the diamond. He didn't want to do that either.

Matt suggested that I get in his car to go to The Jewelers to verify the diamond. Anyone in their right mind knows not to get in a car with a stranger with a diamond worth thousands of dollars. People have gotten mugged, beaten up, and killed off of Craigslist doing that. Obviously I refused for my own safety and he tries to give me a guilt trip telling me I could have sold a diamond and made money. He acts like I'm a business when I'm not. I'm just a guy with a diamond.

The email I sent him said and I quote, "For my own safety I will not be riding anywhere with a stranger with a $3000
appraised diamond. People get mugged and killed doing stupid things like that. I suggest that you can go to the Jewelers and get the appraisal confirmation yourself if you need it. You don't need me with for that. Just print out the
picture of the appraisal that I sent you and have them confirm it. Or just bring the data. Personally, I don't know why they would not call you back." Apparently that is not good enough for him either.

He also tried to low-ball me by telling me that he had other people with one carat diamonds selling for cheaper. So I told him he should go buy from them then if he's going to get such better deal. No, he comes back and insults me. Obviously, he lied about having others with diamonds to sell. I told him I'm not desperate for the money so I'm not going to get in the car with him. I would have gone to another jeweler within bike riding distance but he never suggested that. He just seemed to want to get me into his car!

He also tried to claim that I tried to scam him into selling him a. 85 carat diamond when he was looking for a 1 carat. The appraisal picture that I originally sent him had that information in the email yet he acts like I tried to scam him.

In the end, this guy seem to have an excuse as to why he can't go verify the appraisal and seems to need to get me into his car. Matt doesn't seem to have any ability to understand that I am not going to get into his car for my safety and he claims that I am trying to scam him by suggesting a pawn shop if he had to get some kind of verification. I gave Matt the appraisal number for which he could go verify the authenticity and the information I gave him about the diamond but apparently he did not want that.

Any attempt to convey my person position was met with psychological abusiveness, coercive psychological tactics to annoy me for wanting to protect myself, make accusations and threats to file a report on me for attempting scam him!

In any case, I suggest extreme caution for doing business with this guy as he doesn't seem to have any concern for my safety and has excuses for everything. I'm not about to be the next guy mugged or killed from doing business on Craigslist! I honestly do not know if this guy had criminal intent or not but his behaviors are, as I believe, warranted for concern. No one should ever get into a car with a stranger that you have never met with valuables.
