After my initial excitement about MagicJack my excitement quickly disappeared after purchasing it and using it for less than one week. The initial process of setting it up was more than a little disconcerting as well. As I live in Canada I could not get a Canadian phone. I couldn't just register and get any American number. I had to register a false address for the supposed 'voluntary' 911 service or I couldn't proceed to the next page to activate the number and magicjack. I couldn't register my Canadian address and use an arbitrarily assigned US number or the registration process would not proceed. So I used an address that I had used while visiting the states and voila I had a phone number!
It seemed that all was working well but there was a lot of reverberation and the quality was not great. Less than a week later the unit failed to operate. I followed all the online instructions and it still failed. I contacted the "Live Agent" and they had me do the same things all over again to no avail.
After over 4 hours of due diligence of trying to work through the problems I requested a replacement. I was told I had to provide my credit card information in order for it to be processed or the transaction would not go through. I already paid over $40 for this at Staples I was not giving them my credit card information.
As the live agent I was chatting with wrote english that didn't make for clarity in the process I asked for a higher level agent to speak with. At this point they informed me that "I believe that I have already provided you all the information needed, thank you for your time and have a nice day!" and then promptly terminated the chat session. The english in the last statement certainly didn't appear to have any wording conflicts!
As a note when these chat sessions are ended you have no record of what was said. As I suspected something was not right I opened notepad and copied and pasted all of my communications with these agents during the course of my troubleshooting. I knew from experience that when I would be requested to reboot that I would not be able to get back to the live agent that I had been previously chatting with so I wanted a record of what was done and said. This proved to be the case. When requesting the person I was just online with they were no longer available.
MagicJack also does not provide an uninstall process to remove it from your system.
MagicJack.com does not publish their physical address, there is no phone number available for them and they don't even have a way to send them an e-mail! MagicJack is a owned by Ymax Communications and Ymax has the same philosophy with regard to their phone numbers, e-mail, etc. The founder of Ymax is Dan Borislow and the CEO is Donald A. Burns.
As this is a disreputable and shady way to do business I will no longer support this or any other product produced by this company, whether it works or not. I will not tell others what to do but I will certainly "STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY AND THE PEOPLE THAT OPERATE IT!"
As an end note: As there are already over 147 MagicJack reports submitted to this site alone, and that the Company and/or Individuals I just reported are not on the list, I am requesting a link be made.
