Stuck with broken moden and still had to pay cancellation fees

What a ripp off!!! When I phoned HughesNet to find out how their different payment plans work, we decided to purchase the equipment in cash so as to keep our monthly subscription fees as low as possible. I specifically asked the sales rep if we can cancel this service at any time without having to pay cancellation fees. He told me that if we purchase the equipment upfront it is a month to month plan and can be cancelled at any time without any fees.

After two months of having this service and not being very happy about the speed and F.A. P we had problems with our modem. After spending almost three days with their technical department on the phone to try and fix the problem they said that the modem was defective and that they will replace it and even gave me a case number if we did not receive the new modem within 3 bussiness days.

After a month of waiting and not getting the new modem as well as a lot of phone calls we decided to cancel this service.

When I phoned them and wanted to cancel they said that I can suspend the account until we received the new modem and we decided that it would be safer to do that seeing as we just paid over $800.00 for the equipment and installation just 3 months earlier and we were scared that we would not be able to find another ISP or had to pay another ISP the same amount of money to get started up with them.

So by December we still didn't receive our new modem and decided to finally cancel this ripp off account.

When I called them to close the account all of a sudden I had cancellation fees of over $300.00. It didn't matter that I gave them the case number for the broken modem or that I demanded to see a copy of the contract were I signed up for a 2 year period, they very calmly informed me that if we didn't pay the $300.00 we will be handed over for collection.

Being an immigrant in this country still waiting to file our greencards we were scared about being in collection as we are still building our credit to try and make a new life here.

At the beginning of February a collection company called me to inform me that HughesNet will be so kind as to reduce the amount by 40% and I now owe them only $154.00 and if I want to get out of collection she would advise me to grab the offer.

What a joke. Thank you HughesNet for your generosity of taking my hard earned money, ignore the fact that I couldn't use your service due to the fact that your equipment did not work and being so kind as to ripp me off by another $154.00 dollars.

Hopefully the wheel will turn on this company and someone will take them to court in a class action suit, so that they will at least be known to everybody as the scam artist they are. I don't know exactly how a class action suit will work to stop this company, but hopefully management will all end up in jail, because if they are just closed down they will just start up another company under a new name and continue their daylight robbery.
