I fear my laptop may have been fried.
Here's the "Blow-by-blow."
I tried to "tweak" my Norton Internet Security 2006 program to be sure I had that set right. I have all of the Java updates, IE updates, Firefox updates etc... Still no resolution.
I noticed that my NIS 2006 subscription was expiring within a week so I was going to renew. My wife's computer has NIS 2007 with a multiple computer license that didn't expire until next year, so I wanted to be added to that account.
I solicited Norton for assistance. They offered to upgrade us to NIS 2008 to expire when my wife's original contract ended.
"Great! Do it", I said. That was the worst decision I have EVER made.in making the upgrade I allowed remote access to Norton to expedite the process. During that, the tech informed me that since I had Symantic ACT! 2000 that he could not remove NIS 2006 & I had to allow him to remove ACT! In order for him to remove NIS 2006.
Again, no prob. I'll back it up on a flash drive & reinstall later.
That done, the tech again "went to work."
The process necessitated a reboot.
Shut down - OK
Reboot - Error message: "AUTOCHK PROGRAM NOT FOUND... SKIPPING AUTOCHECK"
Laptop then went to black screen & I waited over an hour to see what would happen. Nothing.
Hard reboot - same error - black screen.
Called tech support. The only response I received was "I'm sorry, " "it's not our fault"; (never mind this never happened before); it was "just a coincidence"; "you need to contact your computer manufacturer"; "you need to contact Microsoft"; "We're not trained to handle that";
"IT'S NOT OUR FAULT, TOUGH LUCK!" that's what I heard.
That's the "SERVICE" I received after over eight (8) hours of calls while trying to upgrade my Norton Internet Security program.
I only contacted Symantec because the subscription was expiring & I had another NIS on my wife's computer that was more up to date.
This is what Norton calls "service!"
I now have a dead computer with over 3 years of data GONE!
Oh, by the way, I also had Norton Ghost & Norton Go Back and (you guessed it,) they don't work either!
I have been royally SCREWED!!!
I will NEVER allow remote access to anyone EVER AGAIN!
They claim to not have the capacity to mess you up, but I am living proof that that's a semi full of CRAP!
They also claim that they have no responsibility for the problem, even though it happened after THEY accessed the computer.
