In April 05 I called to cancel my account with them. The service rep, spent the entire call trying to sell me another package, and making offers to retain me. I told him repeatedly that I wanted to cancel my account. Finally he seemed to get it, and I assumed it was a done deal.
They billed me for April, but I figured it was just a billing cycle thing, and let it slide. They billed me again in May, June and July. I charged back the payments.in July I received a bill for the previous two months I'd charged back.
I spoke with a different service rep after the July payment, John, and I inquired about my bill. He was rude and arguementantive, even swearing on the phone with me, but that aside, he insisted I never cancelled my account. He did admit to seeing a record of my call in April, but he refused to tell me why I called that day.
He did however offer to apply the amount they collected in July towards the two months they were billing me for that I'd charged back. I said, you want me to have you apply the money you weren't suppose to take from me in the first place, to a bill I don't owe you for? He says, and I quote, "that's not a good way of looking at it."
We had several more or less uncivil words for each other, and to this day, they continue to pursue the 3 months I charged back, via a collection agency. Needless to say I continue to contest the bill.
Bottomline, Earthlink is unethical, and downright dishonest in their business practices. I'd advise everyone to steer clear of them. I've had decent luck with NetZero so far. Thanks, Dan...
