Their out-patient surgery is in the habit of overbook patients for surgical procedures. It's first come first serve & when it's down to the last patient & YOU aren't taken to surgery yet, you are told to go home & are rescheduled for another day. Bad practice in scheduling. Esp when patients live 44 miles round trip from the hospital. The 2nd scheduled day I got a call to be there at 0630A.M. & was there but not called until 8:30A.M. To go to pre-op. It then took over 2 hours to type into their computer my extensive medical history, surgeries, drug allergies, drugs taken & basic family history. Again, was told that I would have to be rescheduled because there wasn't enough time to "fit me into the schedule". So this time their nurse manager came & started my IV & then got 6 nurses to move me, the bed, the telemetry monitor to Xray for a Gastro-intestinal procedure. IV wasn't started right & it blew but the nurses continued to try to push drugs into my vein while I was crying in pain. The worse pain was the anesthesia going in, as it burned & my hand was swelling up. After the procedure, the nurses were in a rush to get me out of the post op area. The IV was just pulled out with blood dripping all over my clothing & the floor. I was having a reaction to a medication given to me, but no one seemed to care about it. Rush to get me out.
Later that night, my husband had to return me to the ER, because of a reaction to a drug they gave me during my daytime procedure. I had hives, a high temperature, swollen tongue, & severe abdominal pain. Medications at home weren't working. We had to go back 22 miles one way to same hospital ER per the surgeon's request. Nurse took my temp which was high but told my husband the Celsius temperature is the same as fahrenheit. Not so. My blood pressure was 184/104 even after taking hypertensive meds at home. The nurse told my husband this was a normal blood pressure because it wasn't over 200.
After a 20 minute wait in ER lobby, I was brought into triage to explain what was going on & how my meds weren't working at home. I just wanted the reaction to the drug to go away, but by this time, I had the shakes / chills as well. The ER triage doctor sent me back to a room where I sat for 3 hours until someone came into the room to start an IV. The nurse never examined me, just started an IV so I could get pain meds & a steroid for the swelling & hives. That came about an hour later. I kept trying to tell the RN that I am allergic to the preservatives in the IV medication & that I needed another med to stop the tremors caused by the drug itself. And ER doctor finally came into the room about 4 hours later telling me she was ordering medications I am deathly allergic to, meaning I've been coded before on those meds. She then stated that no one has ever had as many surgeries as I have, nor as many drug allergies that I have. So she wrote new orders & sent the RN in to give IV drugs I am allergic to. I kept refusing these medications because I refuse to be coded over & over again at my expense. This ER doctor NEVER examined me once. She never listened to my heart or lungs or even checked to see where the hives & rash were. She basically called me a liar about my medical history. They never called the doctor who performed the procedure earlier to see what he wanted to do.
I am upset that nurses who work in charity hospitals have no compassion for their patients they treat. I am upset that the doctor was ignorant as well.
