Disconnection due to less than 24-hour late payment

I have had ongoing issues with SCANA for a few months now. I was on paper billing and automated payment. I thought the default card on file had been updated through internet access, only to find out that my requests to update were not being applied to the new card. I would receive notifications of potential disconnection via postal service, which sometimes lagged for weeks in the mail.

My bill would be due one or two days from my actual paycheck posting date, so I would admittedly be paying with a lag of one or two days. I tried to automate it instead. I got a notification on my door that my gas was turned off only 12 hours after the bill due date. SCANA has now demanded a $150 deposit to be held for six months, plus a $75 reconnection fee for a bill of less than $65. I guess there will be no room for food this week!

They even went as far as to say that even if I transfer to another gas company, there would be a $150 fee to do so. Total extortion in my humble opinion.
