Inept Management & Deterioration of Brand Image

I have been a member of this gym for years. Unexpectedly, I just received a notice from a collection agency for back dues on my membership.

I checked my records and realized Gold's had not done an automatic withdrawal for 2 months of dues. With no warning, they sent the $60 bill to collections and notified credit agencies as if I had refused payment.
With my credit card in hand, I figured it was an "automated paperwork" sort of thing, and could be easily resolved.

I went to Gold's Long Beach to pay my bill where the manager refused to speak with me at first. Manager "Jason" finally came out, carrying a printout that he had painstakingly highlighted in a variety of colors. He launched into a prepared explanation that the due date on my credit card had changed and so funds were refused for those two months. And in response to that, he had cancelled my membership and sent a report to the collection agency.

This manager made it clear he would rather be "right" than to make a profit by resolving the issue. So, I had gone in to give him money, but he chose to send me out the door without giving him a cent today. He chose to lose a customer. But I wonder just WHAT did he win? Gold's will never see my hard earned dollars again. Part of the Gold's brand image includes being too big to provide customer support after that initiation fee... Unless, of course, you're one of the manager's friends hustling steroids in the locker room.
