My son Brian (23) was planning on entering the Police Academy. We gave him a Christmas gift to join a club for a limited time. He selected pure fitness. This was financed with my wife's credit card. We found out later that he signed up for an open ended option. I'm sure the sales person put pressure on him to do so. My son has since joined the Marines so we are trying to close this account. I called ABC Finance who takes care of the account for Pure Fitness.
After putting in my sons phone # and zip code (when he signed up) I waited for a representative. I identified myself as Brian's dad. I was told that I could not cancel the account. Only Brian can. I explained it is my credit card being debited and that my son is unavailable serving his country. I kept getting the same story. I asked for a manager. I was told that I needed Brian's authorization to speak with a manager. (How Convenient).
Needless to say I was quite inflamed at this point so I personally went to a Pure Fitness facility and tried to cancel Brian's Membership. The paperwork was filled out but I was told that I could not cancel Brian's membership since he signed the contract. They told me that Brian had to send a certified letter cancelling his membership. Brian cannot send certified mail at this time.
So what I'm hearing is that it doesn't make any difference to these people who is paying for a membership. I now remember why I don't belong to a health club. Their contracts are always put together to benefit only them! I can use my credit card to buy anything under the sun. But apparently it is useless in shutting of the flow of automated debits. I am somehow going to have to get Brian to cancel this account. I hope these unscrupulous people go bankrupt in the end. As areal estate agent, I will make sure all my contacts do not go near Pure Fitness!
