Water heater failed 18 days after warranty expired

I bought a hot water heater from Home Depot on 11-08-05, and today it went out! My husband went to Home Depot to check on this and was told, "Sorry, but you are 18 days too late, because that is when your warranty expired!" This is not right, and I want them to correct this situation!
