I had a lease on a copier with this company in 2006. After only 3 months having the machine my company went out of business. I called Southeastern Business Machines and told them I could not afford to keep the machine, I opened the door for them and helped them load it back on their truck when they came to get it.
They almost certainly re-leased or sold that machine far before the 36 month lease agreement I defaulted on, therefore not actually losing the full balance of the account. However, they now have a collection attorney after me for over $8,000 (almost 3 times the full account total).
Not only are they pursuing me for this extroadinary amount the collection attornety is threatening to take my home, levy my bank accounts and take other malicous measures to collect. Since my business went under my income has plummeted over 70% in the last 3 years. Last year I earned below the federal poverty lever. It is everything I can do to try to keep a roof over my head and support my child right now. Even after I have provided proof of my financial situation and begged for mercy from this malicous collector they continue to pursue and refuse to be reasonable and moral.
Whether these collection practices are legal or not, they are certainly not ethical or moral and I would strongly warn any potential or current customer of this company to stay away!
