Early termination fee ripoff

My account started out as a bundle with Qwest. The Qwest bill was not in my name. I shared an apartment with my ex and the Qwest service was in her name. We split up. She did not pay the qwest bill. I contacted directV and offered to take over the account. I never signed a contract. I did eventually take over the account. Just shortly after doing so, the service went out repeatedly, but a phone call would get it turned back on. Then it went out for a month. Four service calls, still no TV.

I called direcTV and threatened to disconnect. They told me I would incur an early cancellation fee. After hours on the phone going from supervisor to supervisor, they finally admitted that I was not subject to an early termination fee because of the unusual way I had gotten the account.in order to get service restored, I offered to upgrade to HD so that a technician would come out and do the install over as HD requires a different dish. It turns out that the original installer had screwed up the wiring, but that was not discovered until the HD dish was installed. I considered the HD an upgrade. I never used it. I continued to use my standard receiver as it was a DVR. I was paying extra for HD every month for no reason other than to get service restored. Subsequently, DirecTV twice billed me for services I did not request, PPV and premium channels. THat is when I discontinued service with them, and they charged me a disconnect fee of over 300 dollars.
