Fraudulent Rebate Advertising

Last Christmas Eve we bought two Garmin GPSs and a Toshiba notebook computer, all of which were advertised at very attractive prices, but cost several hundred dollars more than advertised because we were supposed to get more than $400 in rebates from Garmin (who promptly sent our $60 in rebates) and Office Depot (to whom we sent all of the information per their instructions at the same time we sent the information to Garmin).

After allowing the 6 to 8 weeks the rebates request we wait, we went to the store and asked about the rebates from Office Depot. The one cashier working there screamed back to the dozen or so people in line behind me, " you can't really expect me to do anything about something you bought last Christmas!" and laughed while the other customers glared. We then called and were told only Bob could help us. We have been back to the store and called again several times. Each time we are told that our information is in the computer and no one understands why we haven't been paid—only Bob can help. Only Bob is never there.

Office Depot is still advertising $1200 items cost only $800 (after $400 in mail-in rebates), so for your $800 item, you pay $1200 plus the tax on $1200 (here, that is an additional 8.25%, or $99), then you take your chances on whether they are going to send you the promised $400 or not. Either way, the item does not cost what it is advertised for—and no one acts as if we have any reason to be unhappy about our experience.
